Comparing o1-preview and sonnet 3.5 to a team of agents
by Michael Browning, Co-Founder
Today's news is filled with reporting about how AI Agents will change how work is done. However, most people haven't been able to see firsthand how powerful an AI Agent can be when tackling a common problem. So, we decided to run a small experiment. You can learn more about how an AI Agent differs from an AI chat interface here. We compared the outputs of OpenAI's o1-preview, Anthropic's Sonnet 3.5, and the agent framework Promethia, which will launch in the next few days. The extraordinary results should help you understand some of the hype behind AI Agents.
The Experiment
I posed the request below to the two LLMs and the agent framework.
I run a local coffee shop. We want to start advertising in order to get more business. We are located in Louisville KY in the Highlands neighborhood. We want to spend around 500 dollars per month on advertising. Can you create an advertising plan for us that best utilizes these funds? I would like some data or research that backs up the plan as well.
The Results
TL;DR
It wasn't a fair fight. But it wasn't even close. AI Agents will almost always produce more thorough results.
The two plans produced directly by the two LLMs are...fine. Nothing too groundbreaking, but it's good advice and a nice starting point for someone seeking general guidance. The two LLMs responded in under 30 seconds each, with o1-preview taking a bit longer. Each one produced a one or two page plan.
The Promethia team took around 2 minutes to run. During that time, it visited over 50 websites, researched the local neighborhood and existing competition, read articles on best practices for coffee shop advertising, and produced three different documents, each taking targeted approaches to solving the problem. The Promethia plan was around eleven pages.
The Promethia plan includes a detailed timeline, specific ideas for ads, and even some suggestions for the future. Plus, it's backed up by some serious market research and a breakdown of the expected ROI. This is where you see the real power of agentic frameworks. They spend the time to conduct research and validate with outside sources. Granted, the time spent is still shockingly low. Promethia used LLMs from both OpenAI and Anthropic during its run.
This helps explain why some people, including us, are so excited about AI Agents and the work they can produce. If you are interested in trying out Promethia, drop us an email at beta@soaringtitan.com
